First LEGO League

First Lego League

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a Youth 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit public charity founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 to develop ways to inspire students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics ("STEM") fields. Its vision is 'To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.'

In 1998, FIRST® partnered with The LEGO Group, and created the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) and the Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®). Both are international programs in which hundreds of thousands of children from over 60 countries participate each year using LEGO products. They gain recognition and self confidence, develop people and life skills, make new friends, and perhaps discover an unforeseen career path.

Longfellow Spanish Immersion Magnet K-8 School is proud to announce that for its very first year of participation-the 2012 - 2013 season-it is fielding eight teams: Four FLL® and four Jr.FLL®. If this 'pilot' effort* indicates that FIRST® is a good fit for the Longfellow community, the plan is to expand in subsequent years so that all Longfellow kids have the opportunity to participate if they so choose.

* Fun fact: The number of teams actually doubled from the original pilot concept due to the enthusiasm of the teachers and the parents that stepped up to coach and support additional teams!
